Mover Beware

We used Personal Touch Movers for a short move in Maryland. They quoted a price of $800 for this limited move. Their final price was about $2,100. Unethical, dishonest, likely criminal only begin to express our experience with these people. For example, prior to the move I had contacted their so-called customer service department and inquired about the cost of having them dispose of some old furniture. I was told the cost would be a flat amount of $100 for the small amount of items we wanted disposed. On the day of the move, I started to get a bad feeling. Before they had a chance to load the items to be disposed, I asked the foreman to verify the cost. He got on the phone and called the customer service department (?). He came back with a cost of $1,100 - for a limited amount of items which took one trip to the land fill for a cost of $45 to dispose. They charged over $1,000 for packing material - some paper, bubble wrap, and tape. I checked on line and the retail value was less than $75 and these guys charged us over $1,000. Anyone dealing with these guys will suffer needlessly. AVOID THESE PEOPLE!

This company appears to be a deliberate scam

Several review and the company's own contract indicate they hold your belongings on the truck until you have paid. This is illegal in some states and allows extortion. Some online reviews of this company report extortion and other crooked activity. The positive reviews may be of one of several other "Personal Touch" moving companies or may be written by the company itself. Of three review sites, only this one has a single positive review of this company. Reviews on the other sites are all negative.

Insist on reading the contract before giving them your credit card number. They took my deposit before I gave my electronic signature and after I told them orally that I didn't want to use them. Reviewers report high-cost required wrapping that doubles the original estimate or more, and refusal to unload when people object to the extra charges, so people have to pay them whether or not the price is what they were told.

When I read their contract, I knew I didn't want to use them and I told them so, but they took their deposit from my credit card anyway. I think they used different names to confuse the Better Business Bureau.

Dishonest pricing and poor service

Dont take it personally, but Personal Touch Movers will fleece you. I asked a customer service representative, by the name of Gia, four times if there would be any additional fees, taxes or charges on top of my $276 quote. She lied, she told me there would not be any additional charges. My receipt order did say there would be additional fees, but they were in no way spelled out or clearly stated. I figured her quote would at least be close to my final expenses. I was wrong. On moving day, the crew came 2 1/2 hours past their estimated arrival time. My $276 move quickly rose in price. $25 to wrap every piece of furniture, an additional 15% fuel charge, a $20 documentation handling fee and other inexplicable fees. The fees quickly mounted and my total costs more than doubled to $639. I had to eliminate many pieces of furniture just to keep the expenses down. The whole move took under the estimated 3 hour time window, yet I was still charged for the three hours. I would have appreciated knowing about all of these charges up front, but the representative over the phone did not explain any of these fees to me. And again, they were not clearly stated or illustrated on the receipt order. They have quite a shady operation going, I am appalled that they are accredited by the Better Business Bureau. I would NOT recommend any of my friends or strangers to Personal Touch Movers.
